TAKING to the open road in a camper van
TAKING to the open road in a camper van, tourer or motorhome has never been so popular and even more so this year with the incredible weather the UK has been experiencing.
What could be better than pulling up, pitching up and making a (temporary) home on a campsite or caravan park? Not many things we would imagine, apart from owning your own static caravan perhaps!
Three Lochs Holiday Park and WigBay Holiday Park are the perfect destinations for those who love to holiday in a mobile home-from-home and with touring holidays becoming more and more popular, both parks are welcoming record numbers of motorhome guests each season.
And it’s easy to see why. Both of these beautiful parks occupy stunning locations and boast a plethora of facilities and amenities for holiday guests.
Three Lochs, set deep in rolling lush countryside and framed by a back drop of glittering Lochs, has much to offer. There’s fishing, swimming, shooting, cycling, archery and golf plus a state of the art clubhouse and a la carte restaurant with delicious food and a fabulous wine list.
WigBay, located on the shores of Loch Ryan, perfect for a morning paddle or evening beach walk. With a brand new for 2018 club house incorporating a first floor restaurant with stunning panoramic views across the bay, a swimming pool, hot tub and new indoor soft play barn for the kids, WigBay is a great destination for a relaxing break. It is also a fantastic base for those who wish to explore beautiful Dumfries and Galloway.
As more people sign up to motorhome mania, ParkLife asked Three Lochs regulars, Pete and Pris Cheesman from Somerton in Somerset, why taking to the open road is their passion.
The couple – who have visited Three Lochs several times – caught the touring bug twelve years ago and have since covered thousands of miles in their motor home. Since they started out in 2006, Pete and Pris have owned five ‘vans’ and currently roam the roads in a 2012 Bessacarr E410.
Pete, a retired Warrant Officer with the Royal Navy who also spent twenty years in the County Planning office at Somerset County Council, says it was always his and Pris’s dream to own a motorhome one day so they could load up the vehicle and take a trip whenever they fancy.
Preferring to frequent sites in the UK rather than abroad, the couple choose a destination based on location and facilities, preferably with access to good cycle routes so they can explore the area on two wheels! While good facilities are important and hot showers and clean toilets top the list of ‘musts’ for most camping and touring guests, the organisation of a site is also a deciding factor when choosing where to pull up. Pete says campsites are far better organised and more customer friendly than they have been in the past, improving in-line with the growth of this sector. Considering the couple take an average of at least ten trips a year, we can certainly take this to be true!
Pris – who worked for Sainsbury’s before retiring- and Pete, are passionate about their motorhome holidays and say they would never want to do anything else and told us that over the years they have discovered parts of the UK they might never have considered visiting without the van and in doing so they’ve been opened them up to new experiences.
While location, good amenities and cycle routes may be of high importance to the couple, another deciding factor is a good restaurant where they can round off a great day with nice food and good wine. So with this necessity in mind it’s easy to understand why they love Three Lochs so much!
